Over The Black Dot

A professor gave his students a piece of white paper with a black dot on it and asked them to write a short essay about what they saw. They were all focussed on the black dot and tried to define it, it's size, it's position. None of them mentioned the white areas of the paper, or the paper itself. And that's what we often tend to do in life; focus only on what we initially see.

When a company has a good company culture, it has a higher employee retention, a better reputation, an improved business performance, and high employee engagement. These results contribute to lower turnover, reduced recruiting costs, and a higher referral rate.

When a company has a bad, or toxic, culture, the opposite is true. Often management’s focus then turns to the employees as the cause, the black dot, instead of focussing on the actual root of the problem.
