Organizations are a lot like sailboats; both operate in an environment where conditions change rapidly and teams need to adapt constantly. When you change a course in a sailing boat, you need to adjust the sails to accommodate the change in wind direction. When you take your boat up wind, and steer more towards the wind, ultimately the boat has its head in the wind and loses speed. One can sail “close hauled”, but not straight into the wind. Jibing is a different course change; with the full wind from behind the boat, and full power in the sails the team needs to prepare the change in direction well; the boom will swing from one side of the boat to the other, with the full wind pressure while the maneuver is executed. It requires balance, a well prepared team able to handle multiple sails to avoid a crash jibe.
