Darren Smith (b. 1984, Virginia, USA) is an Amsterdam-based portrait photographer whose work explores themes of identity, belonging, and the transformative power of self-expression. Known for his immersive “pop-up studio” concept, Smith creates temporary yet deeply intimate spaces—designed for individuals to shed expectation and step into their most authentic, creative selves. His portraits often blur the line between fantasy and reality, revealing people not as they are expected to be, but as they choose to be.

Raised in a small Appalachian town where individuality was often constrained, Smith developed an early reverence for those who dare to stand out. MAYFLIES Mayflies is Smith’s most ambitious and personal project to date: a seven-year journey across three continents, capturing studio portraits of individuals in fleeting yet extraordinary moments of transformation. Inspired by the ephemeral insect that lives only a day, Mayflies honors those who express themselves intensely and unapologetically—often within temporary spaces like festivals and cultural gatherings. Stripped of background and distraction, each portrait distills a pure moment of self-expression, challenging the viewer to see not just a costume, but a declaration. It is a visual archive of radical originality, and a tribute to the human instinct to be seen, if only for a moment, in full color and truth.
