De Vereniging van Ziekenhuis Instrumentatietechnici is als vaksectie van een grotere vereniging van technici in de gezondheidszorg opgericht op 23 april 1971. Op 26 mei 1978 werd zij een zelfstandige Vereniging van Ziekenhuiselektronici (VZE). In 1986 volgde de verbreding naar ziekenhuis instrumentatie (VZI).
