About Sultans Trail - a European Cultural Route

Sultan Süleyman Kanuni of the Ottoman Empire made the trip from Istanbul to Vienna for the first time in 1529 and again in 1532. Both times, he failed in conquering the city. The Ottomans ruled over Hungary and all of the Balkans for centuries. Contrary to its past, the Sultans Trail nowadays is a path of peace, a meeting place for people of all faiths and cultures. The trail starts at the Stephans Dom in the centre of Vienna, where the clocks of this church melted from Ottoman cannons, and ends at the tomb of Sultan Süleyman, at the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul.

Sultans Trail is a cultural walking/cycling route which explores the lands between Vienna and Istanbul, which once had to deal with Ottoman Sultans. The Sultans Trail is 2.500 kilometres long and passes through eight countries: Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. The Sultans Trail is all about meeting the people on the way and getting to know more about each other.
