About SALON -Society for the Arts of the Long Nineteenth Century

SALON – Society for the Arts of the Long Nineteenth Century is a platform for the study of art and art history from c. 1789–1914. Based in the Netherlands and Belgium and open to international collaboration, SALON connects researchers, museum-professionals, students, and enthusiasts to spark dialogue and to further research on the visual and applied arts of this transformative era.

Inspired by the spirit of nineteenth-century salons, we champion discussion, critique, and collaboration across generations, institutions, and borders. Through digital outreach as well as public symposia, workshops, lectures and excursions, SALON cultivates a dynamic, inclusive community in which new ideas and knowledge can flourish.

Building on this foundation, we reimagine the historical salon as a contemporary forum—open, interrogating, and forward-looking. We are committed to revisiting the past with fresh eyes, challenging established narratives, and embracing the complexity and diversity of the long nineteenth century.
