About Realities of Algorithmic Warfare
The Realities of Algorithmic Warfare project investigates how increasing autonomy in military technologies is reshaping the nature of warfare and its impact on civilians and democratic institutions.
From Libya and Syria to Ukraine and Gaza, advanced military forces, including those of the US, Russia, China, Turkey, and several EU countries, are deploying AI-driven systems across battlefields. Promoted as tools to enhance speed and precision, these technologies raise urgent questions about the erosion of human oversight in life-and-death decisions and the scale of civilian harm.
This interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research initiative draws on International Relations, Science and Technology Studies, Conflict Studies, and Law to explore how algorithmic integration into military systems fosters greater autonomy, ludification, and remoteness in war. We examine how these shifts alter battlefield dynamics and challenge core democratic principles such as transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
Our goal is to inform academic, policy, civil society, and public audiences about the evolving realities of algorithmic warfare. Through publications, events, and media engagement, we aim to foster critical debate and shape responsible approaches to emerging military technologies.
