About Product of Prison POP

The aim of Product of Prison is to contribute towards the successful rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners in developing countries through vocational skills training, work, art and social activities. By acquiring professional skills, knowledge, experience and funds during their time in prison, prisoners are better equipped to re-enter society and to avoid recidivism after release. POP aspires to empower prisoners, to restore a sense of humanity and to build self-esteem and self-confidence. Through the sale of products and services from (former) prisoners, POP aims to ensure that prisoners do not become dependent on hand-outs from NGOs or their often poor families, but are given an opportunity to make a small amount of money to buy necessities in prison (e.g. proper food and a blanket), to contribute to their families (e.g. their children’s school fees) and to save up some funds to re-start their lives after prison. POP’s objectives are: • to strengthen the focus of the sentence on rehabilitation and reintegration; • to provide prisoners with vocational skills, job skills and work experience; • to increase the financial means of (former) prisoners to improve their time in prison and to facilitate their reintegration; • to improve the well-being of prisoners; • to strengthen the connection between prisoners and society; • to increase awareness of the plight of prisoners and recognition of the potential of prisoners in developing countries.
