About Onion Innovation and Research Center

The Onion Innovation and Research Centre is an initiative of Field research farm Rusthoeve and DLV Plant BV. The promoters aim to provide other strategic partners in the initiative. UIKC is a non-profit foundation. To meet the current developments in the sector the Onion Innovation and Research Centre is founded. The Onion Innovation and Research Centre will combine research and advice together and the needs for supply chain oriented research approach. The Onion Innovation and Research Centre aims for a maximum commitment of the entire onion industry. For the onion industry there are only a limited number of regions of interest. In Flevoland, more than 50% of the cultivated onion. In the south west almost about 50% of the onions are cultivated but also especially in Zeeland 80% of onions is beeing processed and sold all over the world. In the Netherlands about 20.000 ha of (seed) onions and another 3500 ha of planting onions are grown. These deliver a total crop of 1,35 million tons of onions. This represents a average value of about € 270 million. It must be noted that the volatility of onions are very high so prices can differ a lot both between years and within years.
