When trying to connect to a number of APIs, we discovered that it is not as easy to connect to several different APIs as we would like it to be. Every API makes its own particular choices in format, authentication, pricing etc. There is no coordination or standard whatsoever between different API providers. Most modern APIs offer 'REST'​, offering json over https, but the interpretation of REST varies wildly. Some APIs are even only available using a SOAP interface over http!
