About Mei architects and planners

Mei architects and planners is an internationally operating, award-winning architecture firm and a pioneer in biobased, circular, and nature-inclusive architecture. We design iconic buildings and urban plans that contribute to a livable, green built environment. With a multidisciplinary team, we work on leading projects both in the Netherlands and abroad, always striving for minimal CO2 emissions.

Our expertise spans three key areas: (biobased) new build, building transformation, and urban planning. We leverage the unique opportunities of biobased and hybrid construction methods to enable sustainable densification and transformation. Our core values are embedded in all our projects: New Values, Flexibility, Community, Context, and New Aesthetics. Through our architecture, we demonstrate that a radically sustainable approach is not just necessary but also creates architectural, social, and economic value.

Mei was founded by Robert Winkel and is led together with Michiel van Loon and Robert Platje. Based in Rotterdam, we work with an ambitious and diverse team on forward-thinking projects in the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Norway. To further expand our impact, Mei actively collaborates with various industry partners, from urban ecology experts to the building materials industry.

Our work has been widely published and awarded. Mei is known for iconic transformation projects such as Fenix I and Jobsveem in Rotterdam and Kaaspakhuis in Gouda, as well as new constructions like Schiecentrale 4B and the McDonald's pavilion on Coolsingel in Rotterdam. With the design and development of SAWA, a fully timber residential building in Rotterdam, Mei demonstrates its leadership in sustainable, nature-inclusive housing. At an urban planning level, Mei is responsible for complex inner-city and redevelopment projects, including the OPG site in Utrecht and the Kabeldistrict in Delft.
