The object of the game is to shoot the ball into the opponent's goal, just like in many other ball sports. The team scoring the most goals wins. The field is seperated in to 2 halfs, an offensive side and a defensive side. At least 4 players, including the goalie must stay on the defensive half and at least 3 on the offensive half. This is to prevent 'off-sides'. Each game we play is 80 minutes long, divided into 20 minute quarters. Men's lacrosse begins with a face-off, which basically is a battle for the ball. One player of each team squats at the center of the field and tries to conquer or control the ball at the blow of the whistle. This same ritual is done after every goal and at the start of each quarter. During the game the player uses his stick to shoot or pass the ball. They are not allowed to touch the ball with their hands, but they are allowed to kick it away. The players are allowed to run with the ball in their stick. To gain possession of a ball held by the opponent, the player is allowed to stick check. This is done by poking or hitting the stick or gloves of the opponent with the other player's stick. Body checking is also allowed, but only if the opponent is in possession of the ball or is within roughly 5 meters of a loose ball. Players can only be body checked from the front, between waist and shoulder level. Stick checking an opponents stick is also allowed within the 5 meters of a loose ball which is on the ground or in the air. If a player loses a ball and this ball goes out of bounds (so outside the playing area), the other team gets the ball. After an unsuccessful shot on goal, the ball could also go out of bounds. When this happens the player of the team nearest to the ball, is awarded possession. Around the goal there is also a circle. This is called the 'crease'. Opponents are not allowed to enter the crease and can only reach in with their stick to scoop away a loose ball.
