About Himilo Relief and Development Association

HIRDA (Himilo Relief and Development Association) is a non-profit diaspora-led organization established in 1998 in The Hague by members of the Somali diaspora in the Netherlands. The word Himilo means “vision” in Somali, reflecting the organization’s forward-looking approach to development. At the same time, HIRDA Somalia was founded as its local implementing partner. Together, both entities work to find sustainable solutions to poverty and human suffering, with a focus on South and Central Somalia.

HIRDA plays a vital bridging role between local communities and international donor organizations. The organization also actively engages and mobilizes the Somali diaspora to contribute to the development of their country of origin, promoting long-term impact and inclusive progress.

In the core of HIRDA mission is to improve the well-being of the people living in the East African region through: - creation of equal educational opportunities for boys and girls - promotion of gender equity and women empowerment - mobilization of relief services for refugees and people in disaster areas - promotion of income generating activities - promotion of inter community social engagements - increasing the engagement of Somali diaspora for the development of the region
