About CEAL

CEAL (Centre for Enthusiasts of Asian Languages) is an independent platform for the study, preservation, and dissemination of Asian languages and cultures.

The centre brings together language education, artistic research, and community-based scholarship, with a particular focus on minority and underrepresented languages. Drawing on perspectives from fan studies and participatory culture, CEAL fosters spaces for friendship and inspiration, where learning is both intellectually grounded and socially meaningful.

Current activities include Japanese language education, study groups in Korean, Chinese, and Bahasa Indonesia, as well as creative and artistic workshops. CEAL develops interdisciplinary projects that connect language learning with music, arts and crafts, food practices, and embodied knowledge, with particular attention to languages such as Ainu, Fuzhounese, and Buryat.

CEAL also explores playful and intergenerational approaches through mahjong gatherings, language-based games, and retro gaming events in community settings.

Strongly embedded in Utrecht, CEAL is actively engaged in outreach, including workshops and cultural activities in hospitals, community centres, and care homes.

As an umbrella platform, CEAL brings together initiatives such as Japan Fans, Korea Fans, China Fans, and Bahasa Indonesia Fans.

Through its courses, workshops, publications, performances, and collaborations, CEAL contributes to linguistic diversity and new forms of public scholarship beyond traditional academia.
