Carla’s Smaak – Bread, cinnamon buns and Swedish pasties

Scheveningen harbour is changing. What used to be a bustling fishing community is becoming a haven for sailing enthusiasts and tourists. The former grounds of Norfolk ferries has been transformed into a brand new district. And with new housing comes a demand for leisure and hospitality, but for now, you still have to make an effort to find that. Tucked around the back of Werf70 you will find a modest bakery and shopfront where Carla sells a ‘Taste of Scandinavia’: Swedish bread, Torpedo, sourdough, rhubarb cake, lemon cake, Piroger pastries and other (also non-Swedish) goods.

The kanelbulle (cinnamon buns) are worth the visit alone. We also tried and tested various cakes and types of bread. If you follow the ‘treat yourself’ philosophy and you know the Swedish concept of fika, this place is for you. Carla is full of positive energy – could also be a result of her daily swimming in the North Sea just down the road. Her passion for good, flavoursome food is obvious as she describes what she has on offer for the day. Not just bread or baked products: I’ve seen jams, pickles and muesli.
