Over XVW architectuur

Founded by Xander Vermeulen Windsant in 2010, XVW architectuur is an Amsterdam-based studio focussed on the social purpose of architecture. Whether working on large-scale public housing projects, urban infrastructure or private residences, our process centres the individual. With each project, we work outwards from the people, the place and the programme, taking an overview of the technical and social preconditions. The architecture that takes shape is a connection between all these influences. Current and recent projects include the masterplan and designs for a 1950s site that will be transformed into a 350-home, low-carbon and biodiverse neighbourhood near Rotterdam; the refurbishment and expansion of a branch of major Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn; a private villa outside Den Bosch; and a pair of multi-use, community parking garages in Amsterdam Noord that generate electricity for their neighbourhood. In 2017 we were awarded the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Prize for our De Flat project at Kleiburg, a 500-apartment block outside Amsterdam saved from demolition. By retaining the original 1960s Modernist slab and reimagining it for modern needs, we developed an affordable housing model that acknowledged the original structure’s embodied carbon and delivered social value. This exemplar of large-scale retrofitting was praised by the judges for its real-life idealism and the way the clear, but modest, architecture facilitated this.
