UQC is an artistic research company that explores technological transformation through theatre and performance-based inquiry. Ulrike Quade Company, founded in 2006 by theatremaker turned artistic researcher Ulrike Quade, set the stage for visual and object-oriented theatre in the Netherlands and now encompasses the growing field of art, science and technology. In the last seven years, our work has burgeoned into cutting edge research that uniquely blends expertise in material performance craft such as puppetry, scenography and dramaturgy with that of advanced technologies such as robotics, AI and immersive digital instruments.

We deconstruct technological operations through a uniquely performative, critical and creative lens. Changing how we perceive technology means changing our perception of what it does to us and what we do with it; we call this “perception engineering.” Our work investigates the relationship between reality, illusion and the materials that produce it. We look at objects like real dolls, chatbots, puppets, drones, robots and avatars through questions of deception, projection and ensoulment. Our work demonstrates how expertise and insights from the theatre can contribute to tackling challenges posed by human-robot interaction, immersive technologies and online environments. The mission of UQC is to enrich digital culture by initiating and facilitating transdisciplinary collaborations across the arts, humanities, sciences, and technology that contribute to creative and responsible innovation.
