Over TransAct - TRANSformation for sustainability in ACTion

Climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution… Societies are confronted with unprecedented environmental challenges endangering the lives and well-being of current and future generations of humans and non-humans worldwide. Business-as-usual is not the solution as current structures and institutions are in fact the underlying causes of the problem. Rather, we need systematic, society-wide transformations towards (environmental) sustainability. TransAct intends to actively contribute to this transformative change.

TransAct connects researchers affiliated with the Institute for Management Research, who analyze environmental sustainability from different perspectives: micro to macro addressing questions of transformative change and its governance.

TransAct approaches transformations for sustainability from three perspectives: (1) an analytical perspective, i.e. understanding the governance mechanisms, processes, and drivers of transformative change (or the lack thereof); (2) a critical perspective, i.e. critically reflecting on the (environmental justice) implications of transformative change (or the lack thereof) for humans and non-humans; and (3) a practice-oriented perspective, i.e. developing tangible alternatives or recommendations on how to achieve and accelerate transformative change.

To analyze and contribute to transformative change, members of TransAct: (a) empirically contribute to current fundamental debates: energy transition; circularity; climate adaptation, climate justice, etc.; (b) develop, apply and advance innovative methodologies (such as Action Research, creative methodologies, participatory intervention methods) to accelerate transformative change; and (c) conceptually advance our understanding of societal transformations.
