Ton Sondag (1961) grew up in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, as the adopted son of a maritime pilot. Since he was a child, he has been fascinated by the ocean, ships, and nature in and around the water. When he was aged 15, he left for South-Africa to sail. After many detours, his camera has become his main tool to translate his feelings. Recently, he found peace within himself to focus on that which he loves to do most in a professional manner: creating images that show existing, but still elusive or subconscious stories through photography. Ton Sondag’s life has been eventful. When looking at his photos, it becomes clear that experiences have touched him and formed his worldview; frozen images, often in black and white, with a sometimes sad, sometimes lonely tone, but they always invite the viewer to become engrossed with them. Reoccurring themes are the ocean, the rawness of nature, and the beauty of imperfection. Furthermore, during the past years, he has started to focus more and more on photographing people and portrait photography. These images are also striking due to their rawness and uncovered but instead clearly present imperfection. The focus lies on humanity in its purest, and therefore its most beautiful form.
