A belt strap sewn inside a 1902 sleeve prevents fabric from bunching during carriage rides. Who figured that out? Who stitched it? Whose request sparked the solution? 1881 Census records show ten experienced female dressmakers employed, with an average age of 25.8, at least two of whom went on to be actively involved in their husbands’ drapery businesses. Someone calculated that quality work required skilled workers and paid for it. Seventy women escort a coffin through Hastings on a June afternoon in 1906. They outnumber the men. Their damp handkerchiefs and wilting eyelids tell the story. Design albums display Paris-inspired illustrations meticulously rendered—ambition meeting the customers’ dreams on every page.

Three perspectives shape the Yestersmith's writing: diligent research uncovering hidden details, design expertise interpreting garments and advertisements as historical evidence, and storytelling that reconstructs experience without inventing dialogue or emotion. The method is strict—no mind-reading, no speculation, gaps acknowledged as evidence too. But the goal is for readers to miss their train stop because they're standing in a costumier’s showroom watching a duchess examine silk, feeling the tension when a business partner discovers he's been excluded from a will, understanding why a Thames pilot's daughter could navigate aristocratic expectations.
