Over The School for Dutch

Hi, I'm Jeroen van den Berg, and I run The School for Dutch in Amsterdam. The school has been in De Pijp since 1990, teaching Dutch to expats and internationals who want to actually use the language. We sit on Ceintuurbaan, next to Sarphatipark, three minutes from the Albert Cuyp Market, in a neighbourhood that has been the heart of expat Amsterdam for years. The method we teach is called Dutch the Natural Way, developed at the school over 35 years ago. The idea is simple. You speak Dutch from your very first lesson. You make mistakes. The teacher works with you in real time. Grammar shows up later, where it can attach to something you have actually said, which is the only place it sticks. We do not believe in waiting until your Dutch is “ready” before you open your mouth, because waiting is exactly what holds people back. I joined the school as a teacher in 2015 and now I run it. Before teaching I studied psychology and spent years working in cafes, which turned out to be useful preparation for reading people and improvising under pressure. Our teachers are known for being patient, creative, energetic and a good fun. One student described our classes as “a fun social event,” which is the highest compliment I can imagine. We offer Dutch courses for expats at all CEFR levels: • Level 1, Survival Course (CEFR A1 / A2): beginner Dutch • Level 2, Small Talk Course (CEFR A2 / B1): pre-intermediate • Level 3, Conversation Course (CEFR B1 / B2): intermediate Each level runs every three months as a ten-week evening course. We also offer one-week intensive courses in daytime for beginners, private Dutch lessons at all levels, and in-company Dutch training for businesses.
