Suicidal thoughts and feelings in young people is one of the biggest taboos. This taboo must be broken in order for those thoughts and feelings to be discussed. The moment a young person expresses these emotions, thoughts, there is usually a reaction that is experienced by the young person as undesirable. The young person, if he wants to talk at all, has already taken a big step and this needs to be responded to adequately.

Given the taboo atmosphere surrounding these thoughts, many young people are more likely not to speak this out, but will give conscious or unconscious signals. It is important that people who work with this group learn to recognize these signals.

The group of 10 to 20 year olds is mostly in school and the group up to 30 years also includes students in higher education. The school is therefore an important pillar in suicide prevention. There must be a training in which workers in education learn to recognize signals and make this a topic of discussion. Each school will therefore have to train teachers to recognize the signals. And at each school, depending on the size, one or more people will have to be trained for very accessible first aid; butterfly teachers, who can motivate to accept help and help find the right help for the person concerned. Early identification is the most important step in suicide prevention.
