With patients frequently seeking medical treatment internationally, cross-border healthcare is becoming an increasingly important topic, especially in border areas. Nonetheless, little is known about the needs of different stakeholders in cross-border healthcare. As a result, support in forms of standards, procedures, tools and training is insufficient.

An example of an area in which cross-border healthcare occurs relatively frequently is the Euregion Meuse-Rhine (EMR). In this area, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands – three different countries, speaking three different languages – form a border triangle. Also, four large (academic) hospitals are situated in this area. Although it is assumed that these hospitals deal with problems related to differences in language, systems and culture, it is unknown how these differences are perceived by healthcare professionals and patients, and how this influences the quality of healthcare.

In SafePAT, we work towards understanding cross-border healthcare from different stakeholders’ perspectives. Ultimately, we aim to provide standards, procedures, tools and training to optimize patient safety in the EMR.

The Interreg V A consortium SafePAT consists of many different organizations involved in healthcare in the EMR.
