Over PURE3D

PURE3D 2.0 is a large-scale digital humanities and infrastructure project that develops an open, sustainable ecosystem for 3D Scholarly Editions – rigorous, peer-reviewed 3D publications that integrate data, paradata, interpretation, and narrative in a single, interactive environment.

Building on the initial PURE3D proof-of-concept, the project brings together universities, heritage institutions, and infrastructure providers to answer three key questions:

1) How can 3D research outputs be created, reviewed, cited, and preserved as first-class scholarly publications? 2) What workflows, tools, and standards are needed to make 3D scholarship FAIR, reusable, and interoperable across platforms and disciplines? 3) How do we support and grow communities of practice around 3D and XR scholarship in the humanities, GLAM sector, and beyond?

Our work is organised around three pillars: Workflows: Defining end-to-end pipelines for 3D data ingestion, documentation, peer review, and long-term preservation. Applications: Developing modular, open-source tools for viewing, annotating, documenting, storytelling, analysis, and simulation of 3D content. User Communities: Co-creating with researchers, students, and heritage professionals through use cases, training, certification, and a 3D scholarship Community of Practice.

Across a diverse set of use cases (archaeology, cultural heritage, urban history, anatomy education, and more), PURE3D 2.0 demonstrates how 3D outputs can become recognised, citable scholarly contributions that advance both research and public engagement.
