Over Not Alone Groningen

Not Alone Groningen is a student-run community support platform that was set up in March 2019 by 4 psychology students from the University of Groningen and an artist from The Minerva Academy. The organization aims to strengthen the student community in Groningen by providing one-on-one peer support and organizing self-help groups for common challenges faced by students. Through training programs created and delivered by psychology graduates and experienced training professionals, Not Alone aims to provide peer volunteers and self-help group facilitators with the skills to offer support to their fellow students. More specifically, the trainings provide volunteers with the skills to talk to their peers with empathy and provide them with appropriate social support, while also continuously helping those seeking support to develop their own skills to cope with their challenges. Through facilitating interactions outside of students’ immediate social circles during (and after) the pandemic, Not Alone Groningen also provides a platform to meaningfully engage with the life experiences of students from across the world, something our volunteers list as one of the most rewarding aspects of their volunteering experience. With close to 40 volunteers (and growing), Not Alone has been able to reach out to numerous (support) seekers and hopes to continue doing so in the future.
