Over Noordkaap

Artspace Noordkaap (NK) can be found within the regular channels of the art world as well as at unexpected locations in the urban environment. NK is active both in the Netherlands and abroad. NK allies elitist, regular art forms with popular trends, resulting in cross-border exhibitions, artists in residencies, new productions and long term urban programmes.

Founded in 2004 NK first purpose was temporarily reusing vacant industrial buildings by the cultural sector. Exhibitions, festivals and expert debates were organised and critical statements got posed on themes such as the creative industry, gentrification, and neoliberal urban restructuring. In 2007, NK went undercover in a municipal redevelopment project in Dordrecht where it founded the cities first 'Conglomerate Building for Creative Businesses'​. NK programmed in intensive, brutal, demure and daring ways on various locations.

From 2011 on NK opted for a nomadic existence, and went on a European tour. With a pool of international and local artists and an equipped seecontainer as a mobile workspace the impact of the rise of Populism in Europe was translated into an ever expanding multi-layered exhibition in Munich, Istanbul, Cologne, Budapest, Lisbon and Dordrecht. In addition to collaborations with artists and cultural institutions, NK realised partnerships with social institutions and entrepreneurs outside of the cultural sector.

NK is known for its controversial productions that brings together special audiences, niche and broad alike, into contact with easily accessible, as well as complex art forms connecting to the here and now.

We are currently developing the relaunch in our new home base Cologne, Germany 2018-2019.
