Over Michael Echteld Fotografie

What is it like to stand in someone else's shoes? That question drives my photographic work, which focuses on people facing health problems or other forms of vulnerability—and on the people making a difference on these issues. I am also interested in the influence of the physical environment on its users.

As a social science researcher, I contribute to themes around health, inclusion and social structures, but text and tables have a limited reach. My photography goes a layer deeper to make a difference on these themes. My photographic documentary work succeeds when the viewer becomes more aware of a societal issue. Or gains a sense of what it is like to stand in someone else's shoes. Or gets an idea of what makes the person special, or what drives them.

For documentary work, I approach my subjects on location with an open, intuitive and exploratory mindset, searching for visual stories. In my portraits, I want to show how the person presents themselves to me—in posture, gaze, mood. Together with the person, I develop a plan for the images. In this way, my portraits are co-productions between the person and myself—yet my own signature always remains visible: mood and atmosphere carry more weight than aesthetics, and the connection with the person remains palpable in the image. Careful and creative composition characterises my work, in portrait photography, documentary photography and photography of the physical environment alike.
