Over Khardzhiev Foundation

Nikolai Khardzhiev (1903, Kakhovka, Ukraine – 1996, Amsterdam, Netherlands) was a writer, art and literary historian, and art collector in Odessa, Leningrad and Moscow. From the 1990s onward, he also attracted international attention as a collector of manuscripts and visual art. His collection consists of a famous assemblage of Eastern European avant-garde art and a rich archive of historical materials and manuscripts from artists, writers, and poets.

To preserve and make his art collection accessible, Nikolai Khardzhiev established the Khardzhiev-Chaga Cultural Center Foundation in Amsterdam, of which he became the first director. The foundation's goal was to safeguard and keep the art collection together. According to Khardzhiev's will, the collection was bequeathed to the foundation, which was later renamed the Khardzhiev Foundation.

Since 1998, the collection has been physically managed by Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. With the support of the Khardzhiev Foundation, the museum makes the collection accessible to a wider audience through exhibitions, publications, and symposia organised in collaboration with the foundation. Through the Stedelijk Museum, the foundation has also frequently collaborated on loans from the collection in recent years, including to Paris, Berlin, and New York.
