The ideal of 'the open society' is one of the most inspiring societal notions of our time. The promise of the law, democracy and equity has inspired major societal transformations. However, the core institutions of an open society cannot be taken for granted. Continuous innovation and maintenance are needed.

Within the research network Institutions for Open Societies various disciplines together with societal organisation work together to find structural innovations for both the formal rules and associated organisations as well as informal rules and its networks.

We focus on the following themes: Democracy and Good Governance, Transitions and Well-being, Equity and Diversity.
