Over Human Factor in Cybersecurity Lab

The focus of the lab that is part of The Hague University of Applied Sciences is on helping organizations and society to protect themselves from and become more resilient to cyber threats. Although we do not oppose the idea that the capacity to be resilient depends on technical infrastructure, we believe that human behavior is a key component of being resilient. Attackers look for vulnerabilities to gain access to systems; these can come from people who exhibit cyber risky behaviors, such as by not following best practices or revealing too much personal information on social networking sites. Hence, cyber resilience includes protecting against harm that may come due to malpractice by people, whether intentional or accidental. Field studies, such as observations and interviews, can provide initial insights in the human aspects that impede the security stance. However, in order to test predictions derived from field studies systematically and to establish causal relationships, more controlled measuring and experimentation is required. Hence, a lab environment is needed to study the human behavioral aspects of cyber security in a systematic way.

The lab is a realistic environment for experimenting on cyber security behavior and innovations that influence the propensity towards compliant information security behavior. The lab is currently being developed to meet the research demands posed by the human factor security weaknesses that present-day organizations and households face. It consists of a flexible, modular software architecture. Different software configurations can be used to investigate questions and measures pertaining to password management, susceptibility to social engineering, and other cyber security behaviors of interest, either at a physical setup or online.
