Over Experimental Laboratory for Vital Signs
Acute microcirculatory perfusion disturbances are a hallmark of critical illness, associated with organ dysfunction and unfavorable patient outcome.
In our attempt to find a solution for the tissue abnormalities that occur in critically ill we particularly focus on microcirculatory failure. We found that microcirculatory abnormalities can be prevented by preservation of endothelial integrity. The ELVIS research group under supervision of Dr.ing. Charissa van den Brom, discovered that targeting the Angiopoietin/Tie2 system following hemorrhagic shock or during the use of a cardiopulmonary bypass reduces microcirculatory injury.
The concept of microvascular leakage leading to microcirculatory perfusion disturbances is a common pathophysiological pathway involved in several acute conditions and illnesses. Our work will contribute to enhancing our knowledge regarding microvascular failure in acute and critical illness, and this knowledge might be generally implemented in the field of anesthesiology, acute medicine and intensive care medicine.
