Nowadays, safety is becoming more and more important in order to provide a pleasant environment at areas where crowds gather for different reasons. The background of this growing importance lies in several trends and developments in the world such as professionalism, internationalisation, the continued rise in the world’s population, terroristic threats and a high expectation level of customers are just a selection of reasons behind the increasing importance of this subject matter. The playground of Crowd Safety is immense and has no concrete barriers. It refers to public areas, such as city centres, stations, markets, festivals and free accessible areas during events such as the canal parade, markets or carnival. Besides that, there are of course the paid private areas such as theme parcs, stadiums, and concert halls. The crowd safety minor covers a wide array of dynamics related to the prevention of accidents and incidents on areas where a crowd is involved. The main purpose is to prevent accidents and incidents from occurring through knowing, understanding, researching, analysing and improving the surrounding environment. In cooperation with state-of-theart partners - the Event Safety Institute and Manchester Metropolitan University – we discuss topics like crowd dynamics, crowd modelling, risk assessment and crowd behaviour. These top-level institutes are unparalleled in their knowledge of crowd safety and will guide students with dedicated coaches and experts in the last part of their study before the graduation placement. All relevant safety aspects of highly crowded areas will be discussed, and the gathered knowledge will be applied to real life cases in a variety of knowledge domains. The minor provides a combination of theory and practical experience in the form of exciting and informative fieldtrips. This minor gives a unique view behind the scenes and you will get in contact with key players in the field of crowd safety, simulations and overtourism.
