CML Urban Research is a research programme of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) at Leiden University

CML Urban Research addresses many of these challenges with broad and often interdisciplinary approaches. The programme does research for resource efficient and biodiverse urban futures, through assessments and development of novel approaches. Research in the group leverages and assesses knowledge and tools from a broad set of scientific disciplines to understand the effectiveness and efficiency of different urban planning solutions. We build upon expertise from both Industrial Ecology and Environmental Biology. The core of the research lies in quantitative approaches, including primarily modeling, spatial analysis, and scenario approaches, and linking this with approaches from other disciplines. The scale of research ranges from the neighborhood to global analyses. The programme has two core pillars of research. First, we focus on the built environment, addressing core topics such as a circular economy, energy production and consumption, the (re)use of materials, urban mining, and mobility. Key approaches include for example dynamic material flow analysis, LCA, and building stock modeling. Second, we focus on nature in and around cities, through research on biodiversity, ecosystem services, and nature-based solutions. We are particularly interested in the multifunctionality of urban nature for benefits to humans and biodiversity at large. Key approaches include development and use of spatial models coupled with field experiments.
