Over Bioregional Weaving Labs

Bioregional Weaving Labs (BWL) connects the people and their initiatives regenerating Europe's bioregions and landscapes, place by place.

Across Europe, pioneering farmers, social entrepreneurs, local governments and citizens are restoring soils, healing waterways and reviving local economies. Most of this work happens in isolation. The challenges are systemic, so the response must be too.

This is where weaving comes in. Weaving is the patient, place-based work of finding the initiatives already alive in a landscape and connecting them into a Community of Action, where each initiative strengthens the whole. The people who do it are Weaving Teams: small, dedicated groups embedded in a specific bioregion for the long term. Where a Weaving Team takes root and a Community of Action forms around a shared commitment to contribute to the regeneration of its bioregion, we call that a Bioregional Weaving Lab.

Since 2022, Weaving Teams across Europe have organised together in the BWL Collective, sharing one strategy, a joint Theory of Change and Six Connected Pathways. Our core innovation is Portfolio Weaving: helping bioregions move from isolated projects to integrated Portfolios of Systemic Innovations. To fund them, we prototype Bioregional Finance Facilities (BFFs), a new living architecture that shifts the flow of capital toward the communities doing the work.

Picture Europe in 2030: ten Bioregional Weaving Labs and sixty connected Labs forming one learning Community, investable portfolios in every bioregion, and Weaving Teams recognised and paid as professionals. Living bioregions on their way to healthy soils, thriving biodiversity and restored water cycles.

We collaborate closely with The Weaving Lab, Wire Group, Ashoka, Dark Matter Labs, and Commonland, and we invite funders, partners and weavers to join us.
