Over Ambidex Innovation

WHY Starting something new and innovative is mostly fun and exciting! However, the percentage of technological innovations that does not make it through the Proof of Concept / Pilot phase is very high. Estimates range between 70% - 90% [ref. Harvard 2019, Gartner 2020, McKinsey 2015].

By reflecting on the challenging leap that I lived through from exploration to market exploitation of the digital product called ‘Smart Mooring’, I started seeing a pattern: innovations make it or break it for a wide range of reasons, but the most important: a clear vision, excellent execution and thorough market insight. This, and the conviction that significant value can be gained for society has triggered me to start Ambidex Innovation in June 2024.

WHAT Ambidex Innovation’s mission is to lead and/or guide purposeful technological innovations beyond the Proof of Concept / Pilot phase, so they grow into marketable products and add value to society.

Focus is on Digital products in the Maritime, Coastal and Civil engineering field as that is where I have solid understanding of the domain. I combine this with skill and experience in Product Management (PSPOII certified 2024).

HOW Ambidex Innovation provides ‘Innovation Product Management’ on an interim basis and/or shapes specific deliverables, such as Product Vision – Product Strategy – Go to Market plan, always in connection with leadership, the market and delivery.

The stadium of an innovation may range from end of exploration phase (TRL 3), the development phase (TRL 4, 5, 6) up to the demonstration phase (TRL 7, 8). Activities aim to mature and so prepare for scale (TRL 9), or pivot if needed!

PS: Ambidex comes from Ambidexterity, which means the ability to use the right and left hand equally well. In organizations this refers to the ability of an organization to both explore and exploit.
